How to Make More Money as a Gig Worker: App-by-App Guides
Educational guide · English · Reviewed October 19, 2026
The best way to evaluate gig work depends on what you actually do: restaurant delivery, passenger rides, shopping or a scheduled delivery route. This resource covers every platform label currently listed in GigOptimizer, including the historical Postmates label. Start with your type of work, use the app-specific guidance, and compare your own hours, miles and costs. There is no universal highest-paying app or guaranteed income. The aim is to make better-informed decisions about the time and money you commit.
DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub: restaurant delivery
Food-delivery work combines pickup driving, restaurant preparation, parking, drop-off and sometimes an empty journey back. A higher offer can still use more time than expected if a restaurant repeatedly runs late or the destination takes you far from your next useful work area.
Our delivery guide distinguishes DoorDash earning modes, Uber Eats trip decisions and Grubhub scheduled-block conditions. Use your own current app terms and completed records when comparing options. Keep tips counted once and do not assume another driver's promotion or acceptance strategy applies to your account.
Instacart and Spark Driver: shopping and delivery
A shopping offer includes work that a restaurant-delivery estimate may not: finding items, handling substitutions, checkout, loading and carrying. Spark also distinguishes delivery, Shopping & Delivery and returns. The same displayed amount can represent very different commitments.
Our shopping guide helps you compare similar offer types, record store delays and avoid judging a task only by its item count. It includes a complete-work-period example, explains how to treat final receipts consistently and encourages accurate, safe service instead of rushing to improve a time measurement.
Amazon Flex: delivery blocks and routes
A scheduled block gives you a planning window, but the offered amount divided by the block length is not necessarily your final hourly result. Station travel, check-in, loading, route miles, required returns and the journey afterward can all affect the time and costs you commit.
Our Amazon Flex guide shows how to compare repeated results across stations and work windows without assuming every block finishes early. Available blocks and booking stay in the official Amazon app; GigOptimizer cannot reserve blocks or guarantee that an offer will be available.
Postmates: historical records, current Uber Eats guidance
Postmates appears in GigOptimizer's platform list for record labeling. Uber's official FAQ says Postmates delivery requests moved to the Uber app in June 2021. Treat it as historical delivery context here, not a separate current driver opportunity with a different pay strategy.
Keep old records labeled in a way that matches their source statements. For new delivery work, read the Uber Eats guidance and current official app information. Do not count a migrated delivery twice or merge old and new statements without reconciling what each amount includes.
Use one consistent measure across every app
Start with actual receipts, tips counted once, consistent work hours and the costs attributable to that period. Keep gross hourly receipts separate from a before-tax cash-margin estimate. Neither is automatically after-tax take-home pay, and a tax deduction is not cash reimbursement.
If you work several apps during one period, do not count the same elapsed hours multiple times. Label unusual tips, heavy traffic and other one-off events before comparing results. Test one practical change at a time and review several comparable shifts; one successful night does not establish next week's likely earnings.
Common questions
Which apps do these guides cover?
DoorDash, Uber Eats, Uber, Lyft, Instacart, Grubhub, Amazon Flex and Spark Driver, plus historical Postmates records. They cover every platform label currently listed in GigOptimizer, with different guidance for each kind of work.
Which gig app makes the most money?
There is no universal winner. Market, eligibility, offers, hours, waiting and costs can change the result. Compare your own similar work periods using the same measure rather than relying on an advertised or anecdotal rate.
Will using these guides guarantee higher earnings?
No. They offer a measurement and decision process, not an income forecast. Follow current platform terms, drive safely, and use official apps for offers, account requirements and available work.
How GigOptimizer helps—and its limits
GigOptimizer helps you plan work and manually record shifts, miles and expenses across the apps you use. It does not connect to your gig accounts, dispatch jobs, automatically track GPS miles, or know which offers you will receive. Its schedule suggestions are not verified demand forecasts or earnings guarantees.
Use your own completed-work records to test the ideas in this guide. Check current plans and stored-record limits before relying on the app as your only record store, and retain original platform statements and supporting records. Do not enter customer names, addresses, access codes or other private customer information.
The examples are teaching calculations before taxes, not typical pay or personalized advice. Actual results depend on your market, total work time and costs. An expense estimate and a tax mileage allowance are different measures; do not subtract both for the same vehicle costs. Read the linked recordkeeping guides before comparing figures.
Free account creation does not require a card. A paid Premium upgrade is a separate account action. Review plans and limits on the homepage.
